Dryer Repair

Dryers are part of the laundry process and enable clothes that are washed to become reasonably dry so that they can be then ironed or stored away as needed. A dryer is essentially a large drum which can take in all the wet laundry and spin it while subjecting the clothes to heated air. This allows the wet clothes to lose all their moisture. The speed and the temperature of the hot air in most dryers can be controlled through thermostats and other controls, that may even include timers that can be set as per the requirements of the individual user. Most dryers will also have safety devices, that will not allow the dryer to function until the drum door is properly closed.

When it comes to dryer repair it is all these parts that will need to be looked at to spot the problem that is preventing the dryer from working as it should. A most common problem can be an overheated motor, and simply allowing the appliance to cool down, or catch its breath as they say, can have the dryer working once again. Most dryers work on electricity, though some may even be hooked up to gas lines that provide burners to give the necessary heat. Any dryer repair has to first commence with disconnection of the power supply as well as any gas lines if any.

When clothes are dried, lint in the clothes also gets removed as well. This lint can cause vents and blowers to get clogged. This is sometimes a main cause for dryers not working properly. Most dryers will have a system to trap lint, and these traps need to be periodically cleaned, so that there is no lint buildup that can further block parts of the dryer and cause it to malfunction. It is best to clean out this trap every time you use the dryer, so that the buildup is never allowed to accumulate. You may also find such lint getting into other working parts of the dryer and periodic maintenance of such parts can go a long way to avoiding the necessity for dryer repair.

Another vulnerable part of a dryer is the door and its switch. The door has a gasket that ensures the hot air is kept in the dryer. Quite often ,through use, this gasket can become hard and brittle and cause an improper seal which will effect drying efficiency. Once such a leak is noticed or suspected it is best to replace the gasket with a new one, easily available from the dealers of the dryer. Similarly a faulty doors switch can cause a dryer to just stop working. This can also happen if the door is not properly aligned, and its improper closing can stop the switch from functioning. Switches can be tested with simple electrical measuring instruments and replaced if they are faulty.

Other small parts of a dryer that can quite often be a cause for requiring repairs are the thermostats and timers. These need to be similarly checked and replaced. Heating elements in a dryer can also be one of the reasons why a dryer does not work as it should. If these are electrical, these should be checked and replaced if necessary. Gas burners may not work if the supply line is choked or faulty.

A main reason for dryers not working can come from motors and belts that connect the motor to the drum and rotate it. A broken belt is easily replaced and is almost similar to the process involved in replacing a car radiator belt. A motor that has been burnt out, will leave tell tale signs and can only be replaced or sent for rewinding if such facilities are easily available. Other parts that are part of the drum which can cause problems is the bearing on which the drum rotates. The dryer drum is also supported on rollers and can wear out over time, requiring replacement as part of the dryer repair job.
